Facilitating Caregiver-Child Communication in Autism

Marian Sigman, Ph.D.

The goal of this study is to learn more about how the interactive behavior of caregivers affects the development of communication skills in children with autism. We will enroll caregivers and their young children with autism in one of two parent-training interventions. One group will receive an intervention designed to help parents secure the best and most appropriate services for their child with autism from the State Regional Centers and the public school system. The other group will receive the services intervention as well as an intervention designed to improve playtime interactions between the mother and her child with autism. One of the goals of the project will be to evaluate the short and long-term effects of the two interventions on the social development of children with autism.
